Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, the LEED Green Building Rating System is a voluntary standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings in the United States.
The LEED rating system is the most widely adopted Green Building measurement system in the marketplace, and increasingly serves as a guide for legislative mandates, tax incentive and private sector Green Building initiatives.
The LEED rating system establishes a common and consistent standard of measurement to:
Recognize environmental leadership in the building industry
Stimulate green competition
Raise consumer awareness of Green
The LEED rating system consists of a series of credit categories and points uniquely designed for a variety of building types: LEED-NC New commercial construction and major renovation; LEED-EB Existing building operations; LEED-CI Commercial interiors projects and LEED-CS Core and shell development.
LEED credit categories and points are consistent throughout each of the rating systems, although the point values vary. The major categories include:
Sustainable Sites
Water Efficiency
Energy & Atmosphere
Materials & Resources
Indoor Environmental Quality
Innovation & Design Process (NC, CI & CS) / Operations and Maintenance (EB)
Within each standard, there are four levels of LEED certification: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum-with LEED Platinum certification for the highest point levels. Certification levels are based on the total points earned.
