Siemens Scholarships to Benefit North East Florida
Students
BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (Aug. 19, 2004)—Siemens Building
Technologies, Inc., recently awarded scholarships to eight students attending
North East Florida Educational Consortium (NEFEC) member schools. The scholarships,
each worth $2,000, will be used toward college tuition for the graduating seniors.
Scholarships were granted to those students who demonstrated academic achievements,
character and leadership skills. Students were nominated by guidance counselors
and principals within their respective schools.
“Siemens has provided a lot of support for students within our districts,” Anna
Meetze of NEFEC said. “We recognize Siemens for its contributions to
K-12 education in rural Northeast Florida and applaud Siemens’ commitment
to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed.”
In conjunction with the scholarships, Siemens also hosted a trip to Chicago
for students to learn about the business environment and how to improve their
resume and interviewing skills for their future careers. Fourteen students
attended, selected from each of the NEFEC member districts. The scholarships
and professional development are a part of Siemens Building Education™,
an award-winning program started in 1998 for high school and college students
across the United States.
Included in the trip was a visit to the Siemens Solutions Room where the students
learned about products and services provided by Siemens as well as receiving
a tour of the manufacturing plant.
“It was a great learning experience and I believe the next Siemens group
will enjoy it too,” said Jacob Barlow of Lake Butler. Siemens plans on
extending the trip to more students in the future.
Fourteen rural school districts in Florida make up the NEFEC. As a part of
the NEFEC the districts are able to pool resources, including leverage purchasing
and lobbying power. The mission of NEFEC is to help member districts cooperatively
meet their educational goals and objectives by providing programs and services
that individual districts would not be able to provide as effectively or as
economically when acting alone.
Siemens’ work with NEFEC began in November 2003 when the corporation
proposed a financial mechanism to help the districts implement facility improvement
projects. Four member districts are currently pursuing this opportunity for
zero-percent financing for school facility improvements. Future plans for the
partnership include building improvements for the district as well as more
educational opportunities for students.
