Siemens to help save city of Monroe $2.7 million in energy costs
MONROE, La., (May 20, 2004)-- Mayor Jamie Mayo and the Monroe City Council have announced that the City of Monroe will save more than $2.7 million in energy costs under an energy performance contract with Siemens Building Technologies, Inc.
Mayor Mayo said, "The City of Monroe is proud to partner with Siemens in this energy and cost savings effort. This endeavor is a prime example of this administrations' dedication to running a more efficient and effective form of government."
The first-phase of the project, which began in December 2003, consists of heating and cooling systems upgrades and lighting retrofits to city-owned buildings, as well as the installation of a Siemens APOGEE® Energy Management System to monitor and control energy usage. The project also includes changing the lamps in the city's traffic light system to more energy efficient LED lamps.
Buildings involved in the first phase of the project include: the Monroe Regional Airport, City Hall, Police Department, Civic Center, City Court Building and the Powell Street Recreation Center. Lighting will be retrofitted in more than 40 additional buildings. The entire project is scheduled for completion in November 2004.
The upgraded systems and products will cost $2.7 million dollars, but the performance contract allows the city to pay for the costs of the installations, upgrades and retrofits over a 17-year period using the energy savings achieved from increased energy efficiency. Siemens is providing the design, engineering and management of the entire project, including training for the building staff to operate and maintain the new equipment and systems.
Siemens has applied its building performance and energy management solutions to numerous federal, state and local government projects. Over the past 10 years, Siemens has produced energy savings in government buildings exceeding $1 billion.
Recently, Siemens was named a Premier Business Partner by Rebuild America, a Department of Energy-sponsored program dedicated to saving energy, improving building performance, accelerating the use of the best energy technologies, lowering U.S reliance on energy imports, reducing air pollution and enhancing the quality of life in communities across the nation.
